Update 14th January 2010

Hello everybody and belated Happy New Year! I wish you much health and good luck during 2010! The new chain will be starting soon too!

:snowflake: Update 21st December 2009 :snowflake:

Hello everybody! For those of you who are wondering: I am still around. I wanted to run a chain for Christmas but on a second thought, I'll leave it for the coming year. Re-reading the journal of the old TC, it seems not a good idea to run the project over the Holidays. It's time for your closest people now. Use it well, recharge, relax... enjoy!

In the last weeks I have been reading a lot on dA (time permitting) trying to find something that we would all enjoy. Big thanks to everybody who shared ideas!

Tomorrow I'll be heading home. It has been 2 years since I have been home for Christmas. No need to say I *am* excited!

:snowflake: Merry merry Christmas to everybody! :snowflake:

Life has been so stressful lately, I thought I'd go insane. A whole month flew by like nothing. The madness isn't over yet but it's high time that I continue the Translation Chain project. Apologies to everyone for my shamelessly long absence.

I want to run a chain for Christmas but first a question to you all. I have read different opinions from your fellow participants about the first chain. There were suggestions to do a piece of prose next or to do a poem with a fixed scheme, e.g a sonnet. We could even translate one of Shakespeare's sonnets, although I'm worried some would find them too challenging to actually have fun translating.

Let me know what YOU think. Post your opinion as a reply to this journal or send me a note if you feel more comfortable this way.

Update 2nd November 2009 (II)

Check out the news article here news.deviantart.com/article/98… and fave :+fav: it!!! Thank you! :aww:

Also please, nobody else leave deviantART or disappear under strange circumstances before I have managed to back up the entries! I must admit, I never thought about this happening before. Not without at least a warning.
:icontantrumplz:

Update 2nd November 2009

Chain 1 is complete! Many many thanks to all who participated! Hope you had lots of fun too! :giggle:
I'm very sorry for the late announcement. Life is really crazy at the moment and you can easily say that in the next months will be decided what direction my life will take. I have been pondering whether I will have the time and energy to continue the project but I just don't want to give up on it so easily.
I will try to begin working on preparing the Chain 2 today but before that I want to ask your opinions. I'll write a separate journal entry for that but you can already start thinking what you'd like to see in the next chain. There are already several possibilities to choose from but I am still open for suggestions.

Peace.

Update 20th October 2009

One translation to go!

Update 27th September 2009

New changes to the list of translators. Big thanks to write-it-out for the quick translation and to Scilens for offering to do the English - German translation. You rock! :)

Update 26th September 2009

Hello there! I have really hoped that I wouldn't need to replace any more translators but seems it will have to be the case. Chain unsticking to happen soon. I'm working on it.

Update 6th September 2009

Hello everyone! Just a quick update. Due to some real life difficulties, Hyperjetix28 will replace MysticGlitz in the chain.

Update 28th August 2009

Sorry to spam you. We continue down the chain again.
If you have any suggestions for future chains, don't hesitate to contact me. Ideas are always welcome :D.

Update 27th August 2009

As you might have noticed, we have another little delay in the chain. I am trying to find the reason and hope we can continue soon.
AngelofGod87, who was originally in charge of translation #3, asked me to express her apologies to you all that she wasn't able to participate. She doesn't have it easy in life at the moment so I hope we can all more or less understand and wish her good luck .

Update 24th August 2009

Hello everyone! I'm sorry, I had unexpected net problems but everything seems to be fixed now. The list is up to date again. The next translation is Romanian - German by Zarraza.

Update 20th August 2009

I'm back now! ;) Translation #3 (English - Spanish) by LadyLouve is completed and we are moving down the list again. Good luck to all translators! Enjoy!

Update 18th August 2009

A new change in the list of translators.
I will be leaving for home tonight and will be away for approximately 24 hours so I might be a bit late with updating this journal. Please bear with me.
Have a great day, everybody!

Update 12th August 2009

I had to change the list slightly. No worries, everybody who was already on the list stays and I have managed somehow to squeeze in two more people. Don't think I'll be able to do any more miracles like that :O_o:

Chain 1 has officially started now! :excited:

Here is the list of the translators. I have tried to let as many people as possible participate but it wasn't easy to fit everybody on the list. The dates are just guidelines. (In case the translation is already completed, it's the date of submission.)

The RULES again:

:bulletred: The link to the poem will be sent to Ailoura-aithe.

Once you have translated it, you must:
:bulletred: Upload it to your gallery (don't forget to credit the original author).

:bulletred: Send a link to both TChainRedux AND the next person on the list. That person will be someone who knows your own language, plus another.

:bulletred: Make sure to put the chain number and your number on the translator list in the subject line of your note, e.g. "Chain 1 (5)".

IMPORTANT:

:bulletred: Forward only the link to your translation, not to the original because:

:bulletred: You must use only the translation before your own as a reference!!!

:bulletred: Please make sure to pass the poem on to the person after you on the list and nobody else - or the chain will be broken!

:bulletred: Please DO NOT CHANGE your translation once it is submitted.

:bulletred: Make sure you credit the ORIGINAL author, both at the bottom of your translation and the comment box below it. Please also link to TChainRedux.

:bulletred: You CANNOT claim authorship to any part of any work produced during Translation Chain events. By agreeing to participate, you also agree to this condition.

Thanks to you all for taking part! Have fun! If there are any problems, don't hesitate to note me.

Translation Chain Project (Redux) is proud to present its first completed chain of translations!

Translation Chain is a project started by salshep in October 2007 as an experiment in how a piece of writing undergoes changes during many translations (old account :pointr: translationchain.deviantart.co…) So first, I want to thank all the wonderful people who made the resurrection of this project possible!!! All the translators who took part in Chain 1 now and all the people who joined the project but haven't had the opportunity to participate yet! (I hope this changes soon.) And of course, many thanks to Timothy J Swann aka tetrarchangel for kindly letting us translate his poem "Chiaroscuro" marvintheparanoid.deviantart.c… . Thank you everybody!

Translation Chain "Chiaroscuro", code name "Chain 1"
:spotlight-left::spotlight-left::spotlight-left: RESULTS! :spotlight-right::spotlight-right::spotlight-right:

If you have any comments to make on any of the individual translations, please make them on the translator’s deviation. Don’t forget to give them some love and cheers, for taking part.

Original Poem: "Chiaroscuro"

by tetrarchangel (Timothy J Swann)

On the threshold of day,
The delineating line between light and darkness,
Where twilight ripples across the stilled landscape
And an imperceptible chill rises up.

[The battlefield is expected to be more chaotic.]

With subtlety, the bleakest of every breed of despair
Lives alongside the potential for
Total redemption.

The border crosses.
Dark emptiness reigns;
A sign on the arm’s-reach horizon:

‘The million bright ambassadors of morning;
The million bright ambassadors are dawning.’

Lights sparkle at the joining of day and night,
Barrenness and wholeness,
[There is a reason
There is a purpose]
These beams which could not shine,
Save in chiaroscuro,
Where side by side the presence and the absence are.

The darkness brings weeping
Weeping scours the heart and face alike
That the light is made clear.

The maker of fate paints with chiaroscuro.

Final Translation: "Chiaroscuro"

by bfo (Nedim Skenderovic): Croatian to English

One the verge between light and darkness --
moon stops before the transition began --
I stand watching the empty night sky.

The eyes of our conflict
(a war fades when closed.)

However, she was caring.
She went to survive,
seek union.

What rules the darkness is alone.
It is easy to see,
choice for those who see:

"For a thousand diamonds,
Visionary seeks victory
among the thousands of prophecy,
all clear as diamonds. "

And the blaze brings the down.

Were they naked, impure?
(She says that there was reason)
Powerless to explain the loss of life,
lying in the mist of reflection,
seek,
each other
in absurd forms.

Dawn reveals the mask of sadness.
Penetrating rays,
light of the sun with them.

He no longer wants them to see them,
artist struggles to capture the darkness.

IMPORTANT!!!

If you want to take part, you MUST send me (aka lemon-hush) a note with your language skills.

And spread the word around! Thank you! :iconrainbowwaveplz1::iconrainbowwaveplz2::iconrainbowwaveplz3:

General information about the project

1. What is Translation Chain?

It's a project started by salshep in October 2007 as an "experiment in how a piece of writing undergoes changes during many translations". Here is the old account translationchain.deviantart.co… if you want to take a look.

2. How do you join?

:bulletred: We are looking for BILINGUAL writers. If you want to participate, you MUST read and write at least two languages reasonably well.

:bulletred: Send a note to TChainRedux and let me know which languages are best for you. Alternatively, you could help someone who doesn't speak English at all to participate, by letting them know what's happening, and sending in their application for them.

:bulletred: If you know someone who would like the participate, let them know! Spread the word! Feel free to translate this news article into your language.

:bulletred: Unfortunately I can not promise that everybody who puts their name down will get a turn in the first chain. It depends on the number and variety of language combinations I get. However, if this one goes well, there will be more!

3. How will it work?

:bulletred: A poetry or prose piece will be chosen and announced together with a list of the translators.

Once you have translated it, you must:
:bulletblack: Upload it to your gallery (don't forget to credit the original author)
:bulletblack: Send a link to both TChainRedux AND the next person on the list. That person will be someone who knows your own language, plus another.
:bulletblack: Make sure to put the chain number and your number on the translator list in the subject line of your note, e.g. "Chain 1 (5)".

4. More things to keep in mind.

:bulletred: Use only the translation before your own as a reference!!!

:bulletred: Please make sure to pass the poem on to the person after you on the list and nobody else - or the chain will be broken!

:bulletred: When you submit your translation, include a few notes on what it was like to translate it, and they might get featured in the news, too!

 So, the poem might go from English to French, and from French to Japanese, Japanese to Spanish, Spanish back to English, from English to Russian, Russian to Swahili, and so on, until it is finally back to English.

 I will paste the final translation, with the original piece, in a follow-up news report, along with the icons of ALL the people who contributed to this experiment, and links to their translations.

If you have any questions, suggestions and the like, feel free to note me!
